Hey friends!! I am now back answering the question: How Did Democracy Develop In Greece? You are probably thinking what is democracy? If you don't know democracy means rule of the people. In other words everyone gets a say in what they want. Well actually, back in ancient greek times not everyone was allowed to get a say in what they wanted. in order to vote you had to be male, own land, and could not be a slave. Democracy came after Tyranny around the time period of 507 B.C. Alright, so now you know that, but... who discovered it?!! An athenian leader named cleisthenes invented the idea of democracy. This awesome idea had been used for about 80 years!! Oh my gosh! This makes so much sense since citizens in ancient athens liked it. Democracy worked differently back in ancient greek times then how it does now. For example, Around 4 to 5 hundred names would be pulled, and those citizens had to spend 1 year making new laws. They were not official yet, until athenian men voted either that they liked it or not. They chose the laws by the majority of votes. (How we still do it in America!) Where did they vote? In order to vote you had to attend an assembly. Thank goodness for democracy, it is one of the best gifts Greece has given us. |
